Le jour se lève (1939)

A slowly unfolding love/hate rectangle with somewhat foppish macho man Jean Gabin as tragic center. The naive story of hopes and heartbreaks is magically enhanced by lyrical execution including flashbacks, double-exposures and lots of charming details.

In my book.
