L’année dernière à Marienbad (1961)

Memory. Hope. Loss. Infatuation. Truth. Two men and one woman – what really happens in the garden, and in her room?

This story is already over, it is stated after a lyrical intro where »theatre« and »life« are cleverly garbled. Voices disappear, lines are left unfinished and movements freeze as the aloof bourgeoisie talk, seemingly impassionate and unengaged but with the tensions simmering beneath the surface.

Carefully staged tableaux where surreal disconcertations, displacements, repetitions and reflections break down the story into evasive and alluring fragments. Distant gazes don’t communicate, games have winners and losers, all are stuck in manners as well as in the building itself.

This meticulously made, deeply symbolic formal masterpiece is a selfcontained mystery, both intellectually challenging and wide open to interpretation. Decidedly different, intrinsically interesting – and with an overwhelming musical score! In my book.

You clearly like this movie more than I, but your comments were persuasive and I may give this one another chance at some point. I did like the same director’s Hiroshima, Mon Amour.
