Летят журавли [The Cranes are Flying] (1957)

»Well, rain or shine, we must carry on.«

A gorgeously beautiful intro, shimmering with life and love on a sunny sunday morning in Moscow. But suddenly, war tears everything apart. Homefront despair are interspersed with frontline struggles, building towards an emotionally devastating finale of traumatic hope beyond reason, mixing the deeply personal and the overtly political/societal in a moving and thankfully un-propagandistic way.

Stunningly dynamic cinematography, strong acting, fine dialogue – expressionist soviet melodrama that should be a definite must in every book!
