The Band Wagon (1953)

Lo and behold – a cheesy, big-name, Technicolor musical comedy with at least a modest amount of seriousness and substance, nicely balancing the mostly ridiculous and/or hilarious show numbers! Issues like age, insecurities, and artistic compromise are handled quite well, creating more profound interest in the characters.

To my ears, the songs have lesser hit potential than in other large-scale productions of this kind. On the other hand, a few times they are instead surprisingly subtle and touching. In my book.
