Carmen Jones (1954)

From the clean, sharp Saul Bass title design and on, this is visually and musically quite slick and elegant. Relocating Bizet’s Carmen to jazzy afro-american settings was probably a hip and daring move at the time, but today seems rather contrived and bizarre.

Unfortunately, the incessant and operatic singing kills tempo and makes me lose interest almost every time. Suppose I’ll never be much of a musical fan.

Not in my book despite the obvious qualities.
