Le notti di Cabiria (1957)

»I don’t need anything!«

Scrutinizing the bitter shadows of poverty, the strange but understandable allure of religion, the flickering hope for a miracle in this sordid little world. Elliptical and relativising, equally farcical and tragic, blessed with chaplinesque Giulietta Masina as the naive, emotionally unstable main character – repeatedly let down by the cruel games of humanity, but never fully giving up. All silent era expressions and body language, yet still conveying deep poignancy through the anachronistic overplay. While everyday italian life just continues all around, oblivious to her plight.

In my book of fate and the eternal quest for happiness.

»Make me change my life!«
