悲情城市 [A city of sadness] (1989)

»Things with a hole in the middle bring headaches«

The japanese surrender of 1945 coincides with the birth of a boy to be named »Light«. What follows is changes, disorder, division, strife, conflict, oppression. Communist takeover in China forces mainland chinese to become misfits in Taiwan. Juvenile delinquents create trouble, intentionally or not. This calmly unfolding drama is told at a very relaxed pace where many important things are unexplained and inexplicable, seemingly happening elsewhere. Silent communication is important, sometimes showing flickers of hope in troubled times.

A poetic look at the complicated life in and around Little Shanghai. Maybe in my book of family and society.
