Στέλλα [Stella] (1955)

»All the songs about life, love, and death that mirror the soul of the greek people«, as stated on a poster for club Paradeisos. The main characters are all in position on stage: An alluring star that must fall; two men – weak poet and dangerous athlete – rotating around her; the other woman, dark and spurned.

Actress/singer Melina Mercouri’s successful screen debut is a greek tragedy reminiscent of Carmen, with lots of added bouzoukis. In my book of class, gender, pride, freedom, music, progress – and love as a devastating force!

»I’m not patient. You know me.«
