Ποτέ Την Κυριακή [Never on sunday] (1960)
High-tempo, upbeat, tongue-in-cheek comedy of manners about goldenhearted hookers and a jolly entourage of down-to-earth, happy-go-lucky aegean anarchists. Naively charming, rather ridiculous, sometimes embarrassing with its wallowing in national stereotypes of pride and pleasure – drinking, dancing, making love – as opposed to working and thinking. Surprisingly openminded on women’s lib issues.
Melina Mercouri is the independent and unstoppable force of nature, writer/director/husband-to-be Jules Dassin the intellectual parody who doesn’t get it at all. Maybe in my book of greek »pilsnerfilm«.
