Ηλέκτρα [Electra] (1962)
Ominous, threatening, suffocating – almost Bergmanesque. Starts as a silent (five minutes before someone speaks!) and is executed throughout with subdued power and utmost restraint.
Warrior king returning from war, scheming queen, disowned children – this most dysfunctional family is trapped by destiny, repeating evil by avenging it. Moral struggles with a gender issue touch make things complicated towards the end.
Extremely staged, mindnumbingly slow, excruciatingly elaborate – and with rather unconvincing costumes. Not in my book of greek tragedy.
