Varastettu kuolema (1938)

Dubious characters with tainted pasts. Double-crossing. Thwarted plans. Political unrest in a dark, moody, sparse Finland under tsarist Russian rule. Aristocratic revolutionaries, letterpress printers, hidden weaponry, mysterious women.

A partly confusing tale that fascinates despite its many flaws. Sometimes stunning, sometimes crude and clumsy, with quirky storytelling and silent movie segments. Sly irony and absurd details surprises and adds life. The uneven execution matches the desperate urgency of the subject.

An artifact from another world. Maybe in my book of expressionism and nationalism.
