backtrack; Strictly ballroom (1992)

strictly

Already stylish and campy, but far more tender than in his later mega-bombasm Moulin Rouge, this is writer/director Baz Luhrmann’s success debut. Dated concept and simplistic story, it’s the execution that makes this work.

Funny and romantic entertainment. In my good old book of underdogs and ugly ducklings.

It’s simply and formulaic and we know where it’s going within the first few minutes. I don’t care. I love this movie probably more than I should because it is sweet and charming.

  2. I agree wholeheartedly. It’s also refreshingly campy/bizarre/humoristic.
