backtrack; Saving private Ryan (1998)

Steven Spielberg isn’t very »groundbreaking«, »artistic«, or »deep«. He’s just extremely competent at what he does; broad mainstream blockbuster entertainment, at times with some food for thought. Sentimental, manipulative, easy to grasp – and therefore also easy to like for the vast majority of moviegoers.

This war story is far darker and bloodier than usual. In my book of morally ambiguous adventure.
