Ditte menneskebarn (1946)

A cosmic intro with religious overtones is followed by a harsh return to the stigmatizing realities of illegitimate birth and poverty. Solemn drama of sad farewells, tormented mothers, treacherous love, history repeating itself, the concept of sin, and – maybe – hope.

Matter-of-factly and lyrical. Maybe in my book of good stepfathers.
