»Sometimes we just cannot help people«
Upper class marital drama, avoiding some clichés and indulging itself in others. Lots of heavy-handed symbolism – class, race, opera vs simple old songs, seasonal changes vs telling interiors, overworked men vs domestically confined women. The pregnant dialogue is too intellectual, the story severely contrived, and the characters passive beyond belief.
Some tender and gripping moments, but almost everything has been better executed elsewhere. Not in my book of getting old.
