– There was a young girl who loved Faust, and saved his soul with her love.
No evil characters, still plenty of high drama! (Loosely) based on a book by swedish Nobel laureate Selma Lagerlöf and directed by Mauritz Stiller, this one has lots of sentimentality, a few farcical tidbits added for good measure – and a tucked-on »deus ex mineralia« ending.
The characteristically high-strung silent movie acting sometimes heightens the otherwordly atmosphere of this »fairytale« – though not enough so for my book of love, money, and madness.
