A very unexpected and rather startling intro sequence – hallucinatory, surreal, spooky – leads to a dynamic and odd directorial endeavor by a young Ingmar Bergman.

Focusing quite a lot on class issues while following a likable couple suppporting each other through the obstacles of life. With a more convincing finale this could well have qualified for my book of high-strung, hypertense melodrama with didactic streaks.
