Λατέρνα, φτώχεια και φιλότιμο [The hurdy-gurdy] (1955) Two poor, struggling street musicians happen upon the runaway daughter of a rich ship magnate – humorous complications arise! An oldfashioned, mildly prejudiced featherweight story with good acting and snappy dialogue. There is little … Continue reading
Eggs (1995) Intrusion, incapability, (in)dependence. Slow and absurd kitchen sink comedy with unexpected, largely unexplained horror story details. An enjoyable and somewhat disturbing mystery. Maybe in my low-key book of remote brethren.
En soap (2006) – It hurts. – Lots of things do, don’t they? Slippery when wet! Self-image and unfulfilment are under scrutiny in this sordid, strange, sad »comedy« on relations, identity, gender, and sex. Both tender and raw in its entertaining, … Continue reading
Levottomat (2000) Restless, aimless, and clueless on relations, (lack of) intimacy, and sex – all set in a heavily color-saturated, erotically charged Finland. Partly unpredictable, highly implausible, mostly inexplicable. Maybe in my book of emotion and numbness.
Nattevagten (1994) Uneven, unlikely, sometimes unsettling. Good but not great thriller with far too many obvious clues and cheesy plot twists. Slick, stylish, effective – competent craftsmanship, though hardly in my book of law.
Άρπα Colla [Arpa colla] (1982) Ideal and Opportunity clashes cinematically in this rather cheesy combination of satire and parody. Unfunny, unengaging, unfulfilled. Too stuck in its own time, too clever for its own good. Not in my book of meta-movies.
Οι Γερμανοί ξανάρχονται [The germans strike again] (1948) Absurd propagandistic comedy of sorts, trying to calm the intense political heat by reminding the dissatisfied greek people of the even worse nazi years. Interesting and unique concept, clumsy execution. Not in my book of bizarre dreams.
